Diabetes (or diabetes mellitus) is a chronic condition in which the blood glucose (or blood sugar) level in a person becomes high either because of inadequate production of insulin in the body or body cells not responding to insulin or both. The blood glucose level in our body is usually controlled by insulin, which is a hormone produced by pancreas. Insulin helps in lowering blood sugar level. For example, after we take food, insulin is released from the pancreas to stabilize the glucose level. However, in a diabetic patient, the lack of response to insulin or insufficient production of the same can cause hyperglycemia. Although, one can keep diabetes under control, it lasts till the last breath. Types of Diabetes Type 1 Diabetes is also known as insulin dependent diabetes. It usually begins in childhood. In this type of diabetes, the insulin producing cells of the pancreas (beta cells) are destroyed by the immune system leading to little or no insulin production. Type 2 Diabetes is more common than Type 1 Diabetes. In this type of diabetes, the insulin production in the body decreases over time as pancreas stops producing it or produce less of it. Due to lack of insulin, glucose could not get into our body cells to be used as energy. Symptoms of Diabetes Many people who have diabetes are unaware of the problem they have.
